Why are the Udupi Mutts undemocratic, asks Amrith Shenoy

2010 February 3
by janaparavedike

Udupi District Administration has taken a step to ban vehicular movements in Carstreet. This step is purely undemocratic and aginst the best interests of people of Udupi.this is to satisfy some vested interests.I call General Public of udupi(udupiya mahajanathe) to oppose this step with a loud voice.Majority of People have opposed this proposal in the several meetings called by DC because this creates a huge inconvenience to the traffic system of Udupi and also affects livelyhood of nearly 200 families who are dependent on the business they do in that region.
Point to be noted heren is that most of the shops and houses inside carstreet belongs to individual partys, not owned by Krishnamutt.and also road which passes through carstreet is a state high way.and it is a property of public.security should not be provided at the cost of public interest.
janapara vedike has extended its full suport to the sathyagrahas which are being done against this step.I would like to appriciate and also thank Mr SriRam Diwan, who is a born agetator(Huttu Horatagara),never bothered about consequences while speaking for the truth, always stood for the people,a pue secularist. He has been always an inspiration for me,a special thanks to him for joining hands with us in this perticular fight(sathyagraha)….–Amrith Shenoy P,Secretary,Karnataka Pradesh Youth Congress Committee……

Udupi Mutts’ ban on vehicles into car street for security reasons invites massive protests

2010 February 1

Udupi. Jan 31: Several organizations have come together to protest against the ban on vehicles inside the Udupi car street. The ban has come to place citing security reasons. This ban however stands to cause great inconveniences and losses to people of all trade near Krishna Mutt. Hence traders, residents, and taxi-drivers went on a day-long hunger strike in front of the DC office to protest against the ban.

The protest in front of DC office.

Since there was a complete participation of people from car street in the bandh and strike, the temple premises wore a deserted look. He was representing JV in the protest.

Local Jamaath excommunicates Hussain Pavoor

2010 February 1

Mangalore: In a shameful step backwards, a local Jamaath of Aledka in Harekala village has excommunicated writer and ex-gram panchayat member Hussain Pavoor. The Usthaad of Thokarebettu Madrasa allegedly had severely thrashed some children of the community for participating in the school day function. He even abused their mothers obscenely for allowing their kids to participate in such events.
Hussain Pavoor is said to have questioned the act of humiliation and violence on women and children. Unable to tolerate this dissent, the Jamaath decided to excommunicate Mr.Pavoor.

Hindu Jagarana Vedike district co-convenor Laxmeesha Gabladka is disillussioned

2010 February 1

Mangalore: He sincerely believed it to be service to society, God, Religion, Ram, holy cow and an organization for the welfare of Hindu saints. Laxmeesha Gabladka of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike held on to these beliefs for as long as he could, untill recently when he got sick of the fact that the only purpose of all these organizations was to serve the SANGH and the causes were mere vehicles. Disheartened and disillussioned, Laxmeesha has quit HJV.

First Blow for Udayavani

2010 January 24
by janaparavedike

25 January 2010

To,

Hon’ble Chairman,
Press Council of India,
New Delhi

Dear Sir,

Sub: My Complaint against Managing Editor and Editor of Kannada Daily Udayavani
Ref: My Earlier letters dated 6 February 2009 and 17 September 2009 and the letter from your
office Ref. No 14/177/09-10-PCI dated 10 November 2009

The above letter from your office had the letter of Udayavani enclosed with that. I would like to respond to it in the following manner:
1. Point number (1) of the Respondent’s letter says that the two letters of the complainant are ‘vague and untanable’ [sic]. However, my complaint is very clear in stating that the “report had the evil intentions of destroying the law and order, raking up communal feelings in the already communally sensitive Udupi District, and creating an atmosphere of anxiety among the general public” (letter dated 6 February 2009) and that the “report created a fear psychosis in me” as I am a “member of the general public” (letter dated 17 September 2009). Both the letters put together, should make more sense rather than making the case vague, as the Respondent claims.
2. With regard to point number (2) of the Respondent’s letter, that “the complainant appears to be a busy body who indulges in filing complaints to this Counsel or other bodies”, it is unbecoming of the Editor to make such undemocratic statement. If the Daily really believes in the spirit of democracy, it should rather answer objectively to the complaint raised, than making such unhealthy comments which suppress a healthy public debate on public/social issues.
3. Further, continuing with the same point (no. 2), the Respondent speaks about the PTI report published in the Daily. He wants to justify and legitimize his earlier report reported from a ‘devotee’ published on 14 January 2009 on the basis of the PTI report published on 18 January 2009. However I would like to say that these two reports are very different and about different issues and are in no way connected. For your kind notice, I am once again enclosing the original and translated copies of both these reports. The PTI report (of 18 January 2009) never talks about the ‘terrorists’ as the first report of 14 January 2009 does. It merely speaks of twenty Srilankan Tamilians arrested for not having proper travel documents; whereas the report of 14 January 2009 vividly speaks of a terrorist who stumbled and fell down and from whose bag a bomb emerged, etc.
4. Point number (3) of the Respondent does not stand in light of the previous point from me.
5. With regard to Point number (4), of the Respondent, the complainant may be unable to establish that the Editor did receive a letter dated 19 January 2009 from him.
6. With regard to point number (5) of the Respondent, I would like to bring to your kind notice that though the Respondent says “no community is referred in the report” and thereby “it would not rake up communal feeling”, the Daily is very notorious to covertly refer to the ‘Other’ community (i.e. Muslim community). The mass Hindu readership understands this covert reference and this tradition is established by the Daily over a period of time. Such covert references often show the ‘other’ community in bad light. If the hon’ble Chairman requires examples of such references as taken by the Daily, the Complainant would be willing to provide it.
7. With regard to Point number (6) of the Respondent, though the Respondent claims that there was “no violation of ethics of journalism”, I would assert that there was a gross violation of journalistic ethics. The Respondent is contented to say that “It is clearly mentioned as ‘reported’”. The complainant would like to ask him if that means all cock and bull stories pass as authentic journalistic reports by a mere mention that “it is reported”? Does that expression legitimize anything and everything as journalistic report? That too, when the matter is sensitive enough to create panic and anxiety among the public is it not a gross violation of journalistic ethics that the Editor did not verify the veracity of the ‘report’? Most importantly, I would like to add that I could verify through RTI that no such terrorist was found or arrested in Shabarimala during the Shabarimala festival 2008-09, contrary to the report of only Udayavani, the Daily. I am enclosing a copy of the letter from Dy.S.P. of Pathanamthitta in proof of this. I would like you to initiate action against the Managing Editor and the Editor of the Kannada Daily Udayavani based on this letter.
8. With regard to Point number (7) of the Respondent, I would like to say that this august counsel also functions as the moderator of disputes such as these. Hence, the Respondent pleading your kind self for a stern action against the complainant once again goes strongly against the democratic ethos with which public institutions are established in the country.
In light of all the above points it is quite clear that the Managing Editor and the Editor have not only committed mistake but are also trying to cover it up by turning the blame on the Complainant. I request you to please look into the whole affair once again and take serious action against the Managing Editor and Editor of the Kannada Daily Udayavani.

Thank you,

Yours Sincerely,

Humiliation for Udupi for missing a celestial event by staying indoors!

2010 January 16

udupi: Known as a town of intelligent and educated people, Udupi bore a shameful sight on friday as the town was completely deserted reason being Solar elipse. Localities surrounding Krishna Mutt were completely deserted did not surprise anybody. But the fact that the commercial centers were almost shut down was shocking. Several hotels neither did have any customers nor were they ready to serve anything. Buses plying to villages gave up by midday. Several auto drivers kept out of the streets. And the most bizzarre instance came when schools that are supposed to instill rationale and scientific bent of mind declared holiday.
Manipal University, supposedly a university that champions scientific pursuits cancelled it’s press meet citing the solar eclipse as a reason. Rationalists and skeptics however have blamed the two major kannada dailies, Vijaya karnataka and Udayavani especially for instilling irrational and illogical fears in the minds of the people by publishing false, irrational, unscientific and baseless articles on the eclipse. Several activists also suspect the priestly class of the Udupi Mutts waging a conspiracy to Hindufy and Brahminify every section of the society by instilling fear in them. Fear is the weapon the priestly class uses to marginalise people, the activists claim.

Naxal accused: Yashoda forced to sign a statement against her wishes

2010 January 16

Yashoda is one of the survivors of the infamous Parvathi and Hajima encounter case. The duo were killed in an ‘encounter’ near Mudigere when the house they were using as temporary shelter was raided. Yashoda, 28, still remembers vividly the night of the dreadful night. “After a regular meeting on our movement (Kudremukh rashtriya Udyanavana Movement) we were about to go to sleep. That’s when Parvathi came in shouting, ‘police shootout’. We all ran towards the attic, even as we saw that Parvathi was already shot. I was running ahead of Hajima. Hajima too fell victim to one of the bullets. I however survived even though a bullet did strike me on my hip,” she recalls.

8 years since the encounter, life has been living hell for Yashoda. “I was just in the movement against the national park. Neither was in the Vimochana Ranga nor was I a party cadre. But here I am, forced to go out of my means fighting a case,” she despairs. Yashoda is a wage-labourer working for the small coffee plantations in Jermina, Mujekan a remote village near Hornadu. Out of the 3500- 4000 rupees she earns on the right season, she is forced to spend about a thousand rupees every month to come to Udupi court twice every month for the hearings.

Last week however, what was to be another banal hearing, turned out to be kafkaesque for Yashoda yet again. Plainclothesmen claiming to be Bangalore C.O.D asked Yashoda to sign a statement that claimed yashoda as a naxalite, who was hiding in the forests equipped with modern ammunitions and adhering to ideology of Mao and Lenin, with the ultimate goal of overthrowing the Indian state. Yashoda laughs even as she narrates the incident.

When Yashoda did refuse these people, even “offered” her a ‘trip’ to home on their jeep.
